Instax Mini 11 Review • Print photos on the go

Instax mini 11

Instax mini 11 is a compact Polaroid camera that prints the photos you take right away.

Fujifilm releases new Instax instant cameras every year, enhancing and complementing previous models. The company has long had advanced devices – with a display and the ability to print from a phone, like the Instax Mini LiPlay – but the classic Instax mini models are still the most popular. One of them fell into our hands – we tell you how the editorial staff liked it.

What’s new in Instax mini 11

Instax mini 11 is an updated version of the most popular Instax mini 9 camera. It brings together the best of the classic model: harmonious design, low price and fast printing. There are also many colors: there are white, blue, graphite, lavender and pink options. The same cartridges 62 × 46 mm are used here, so cards from the old camera are suitable for the new product.

The body has become more compact, so it is more convenient to hold the camera in one hand. The manual exposure control has disappeared from the front panel: now there are no indicators around the lens at all, and the exposure is adjusted automatically, depending on the ambient light. Flash power and shutter speed also have a life of their own – you don’t have to adjust anything. On the one hand, this simplifies the shooting process, on the other hand, those who like to correct the light and picture manually will be left without such an opportunity.

We had a model in white. The body is made of high-quality matte plastic, as it turned out, quite easily soiled – so you need to use the camera carefully.

There are strap hooks on the sides of the case – you can hang it from the convenient side. The lace itself comes with the camera. Also included are AA batteries and two caps for the shutter release button – one of which glows in the dark.

On the lens, as in the previous model, there is a selfie mirror: in it you can see your reflection and correctly compose the frame. Thanks to the clever design of the body (the thumb lands directly on the shutter button) and the strap that can be thrown over the wrist, the camera is easy to hold at arm’s length during shooting.

How it works

The camera itself is very simple: there is only one button for the release. Instead of the display, which older models have, everything here uses a classic viewfinder-window, where you need to look during shooting.

To turn on the camera, you need to open the lens: for this, there is a small lever next to it. To take a selfie, you need to pull it forward a little more: there is even a special Selfie Mode mark on the body. To turn off the gadget – you need to snap it back, manually.

Another unusual detail is the analog counter located near the cartridge compartment. It shows the number of cards remaining – just like in old cameras.

The process of shooting on Instax is very exciting – after all, the photo will be immediately printed. The unsuccessful shot will have to be shot again, and you will also have one attempt at that. Constantly shooting with a smartphone, we have already forgotten what it is like to warn people before shooting so that no one closes their eyes, and carefully think over the plot so that everything will turn out beautifully for sure.

Conveniently, the camera focuses very quickly – press the shutter button and the photo immediately starts printing. The development process takes a couple of minutes: watching the colors become brighter is a separate pleasure.

Instax cards create a special atmosphere: they can be used as postcards, hung on magnets, and given to friends immediately after shooting to preserve the memory of pleasant moments. They have pleasant muted colors, like on old photographic film, and even the simplest frame turns out to be especially warm and cozy.

We tried Instax shooting in different conditions, indoors and outdoors. In terms of quality, the same rule applies here as with budget smartphones – the brighter the lighting, the better the picture will turn out. Since the camera has an automatic flash, it fires in poor light – as a result, the subject is overexposed, and the background is too dark. We also do not recommend shooting at close range – it is difficult for the optics to focus.

But it is important to understand that the mini line is not about technical bells and whistles and super-functions. This is a gadget for entertainment, not a replacement for a real camera. If you need any additional settings and the ability to control shooting, then pay attention to the older models from the Instax LiPlay and SQUARE lines.
