The international Oppo Inno Days 2020 conference took place today , in which the company presents its vision and development strategy for the coming years. During this event, however, we could also see the presentation of an Oppo brand roll-up phone concept. Here’s what Oppo X 2021 will look like and bring .

Oppo X 2021 integrates a variable OLED rolling screen. During the event we were also introduced to the engine that puts this “ Roll Motor by Oppo ” mechanism into operation . It can expand the phone’s display from 6.7 inches to a maximum of 7.4 inches , turning it from a smartphone into a kind of tablet.

The drive rail consists of two motors that apply constant forces so that the device is deployed evenly to reduce the risk of damage during the process . This mobile phone allows you to scroll the screen as much as needed, unlike most foldable smartphones that allow us to use in only two ways.

In addition to the rolling mechanism, Oppo engineers have also developed a kind of sliding bearing on the side that includes a 6.8mm spring. The latter allows the screen to run smoothly.

Considering that the screen of the Oppo X 2021 is not as rigid as the conventional ones, Oppo has also developed 2-in-1 Plate Display, a support that supports the phone screen on both sides inside. As you can see in the pictures, the structure resembles blades that can support the screen, giving it rigidity. When the device is closed, these slats form a flat supporting surface. Thus, the display should be provided by this mechanism and remain flat regardless of the situation.

On the back, Oppo has adopted a dynamic housing, consisting of a fixed part and a movable part. While the screen is running, the fixed part will protect the battery, the CPU and other internal components. However, taking into account the fact that the mobile phones will be quite sensitive, Oppo X 2021 will also use Warp Track . This is a rolling process through a proprietary technology that will be mounted to the base of the phone to give it extra strength. It would be made of steel and would have a thickness of only 0.1mm.

The technologies mentioned above are only disclosed by Oppo and should be implemented in Oppo X 2021. The company claims that it has so far applied for no less than 122 patents during their development, of which 12 are related only to the mechanism of rolling. Through Fold Universe, below we have a hands-on clip in which we can see the phone in all its splendor.

It looks like 2021 will be the year of rolling phones. Both LG and TCL are currently working on their own screens and rolling stock. While Samsung is betting on foldable phones and does not seem to change its strategy. There have been comfort rumors that Apple is also planning to launch a convertible phone. It remains to be seen which of these technologies will be more reliable in the long run.
